Protest held at York Minster over Sentamu comments
1:00pm Wednesday 1st February 2012 in
Campaigners demonstrated today at York Minster against the Archbishop of York's comments on gay marriage.
Among those taking a stand was Aaron Rawcliffe, 18, of Clifton, who handcuffed himself to a lamp post, with a sign at his feet bearing the words "Homophobia is so gay".
The protest was called after Dr John Sentamu warned Prime Minsiter David Cameron against legalising same-sex marriage.
Dr Sentamu said it was not for the Government to dictate to the church and to "redefine clear social structures".
But gay rights campaigner Peter Tatchell denounced the comments and welcomed today's protest. He said the Archbishop was imposing his personal opposition to gay marriage on to society.
A number of speakers spontaneously addressed the crowd from the steps outside the Minster at the start of the protest earlier where a number of police officers are watching the scene from the sidelines.
Placards held high included slogans such as “God loves everyone. Why can’t the church?” as well as “Marriage equality for all” while rousing chants of “What do we want? Marriage equality. When do we want it? Now” are ringing out.
The atmosphere was upbeat and positive, despite the winter chill.
Watching the protest was Jonathan Bonner, 56, who said he wanted to attend to give his support to the event, adding: “I have a personal discomfort with my church making life difficult for ordinary human beings.”
Speaking at the conclusion of the protest, its organiser Cem Turhan, 20, said: "It was a success. We stood in solidarity. I am really proud and happy about how it has gone."
Mr Turhan, who is LGBT officer at the University of York, said he had requested to meet with Dr Sentamu.
